  • Doris Oshiro grew up in Honolulu and is the 7th of 9 children born to Nobushige and Masako (Nakasato) Nakasone. She attended temple from an early age. First at Waialae Sunday School and then Kaimuki Sunday School. Later, Doris and her own family became part of Jikoen Hongwanji.

    Her children attended the temple’s Lumbini Pre-School and besides attending temple, Doris was part of the Jikoen BWA (Buddhist Women’s Assn.). She is the former president of Jikoen Hongwanji.

    Currently, Doris volunteers at Jikoen and is a guardian/caregiver for her adult nephew with intellectual disabilities.

    Doris worked in the hotel industry at the Ilikai Hotel for 33 years and retired in 2017 from the Department of Homeland Security as a TSA Officer.

    She has a daughter and a son and four (4) grandchildren. Her hobbies include traveling, watching documentaries, learning about her Okinawan cultural identity, sewing and gardening.

  • As of March 27, 2022, in accordance with the revised State of Hawaii guidelines, the use of masks is optional inside the temple. Please be kind to those who choose to continue to wear a mask.
