Dennis Tashiro | President, Windward Buddhist Temple

Dear Members & Friends

Happy New Year!

Although my current term as Windward Buddhist Temple (WBT) president is about to end, in January 2025, I will begin another two-year term as WBT president. With the Buddha and Dharma as guides and along with fellow officers, I'll continue to serve the temple Sangha.

In 2024, Rev. Sol Kalu was assigned as WBT's minister. Rev. Bert Sumikawa, although now a retired minister, continues to support WBT in different ways and assists Rev. Kalu when needed.

Welcome Rev. Kalu

Rev. Sol Kalu became the Resident Minister of Windward Buddhist Temple in August 2024. Watch Rev. Kalu’s Year End Dharma Talk and read Rev. Kalu’s 2025 New Year message here.

COVID-19 Temple Advisory

As of May 23, 2021, the City & County of Honolulu is allowing religious entities to open beyond Minimum Basic Operations. We have carefully reopened the temple and restarted many of the temple programs. Weekly In-person Sunday Dharma Services began in January 2022.

COVID-19 has provided us many opportunities to realize the Buddha’s teaching of impermanence, interdependency, and compassion as we all help each other through this global pandemic. Please follow the CDC guidelines and keep each other safe.

Windward Buddhist Temple is a branch of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii serving Windward Oahu.

Services

Join us for our weekly Dharma Service, every Sunday at 9 am. On the first Sunday of each month, we have family activities focused on providing fun for the whole family.

Established in 1968

Kailua Hongwanji Mission was established in 1968 at its present location in Kailua, Hawaii. In 2012, through the support and vision of its membership, the original temple was demolished and rebuilt. The new temple was completed and dedicated on February 22, 2014, which coincided with major donor Dorthy Ono's 10th Memorial Anniversary.

Reflecting its broader role on the Windward side of Oahu, Kailua Hongwanji Mission became the Windward Buddhist Temple on January 1, 2019.

Kailua Hongwanji Mission, dba Windward Buddhist Temple, strives to provide an all-inclusive and all-embracing environment rooted in the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist teachings of wisdom and compassion enabling all to live in harmony, peace and gratitude.
