Project Dana: July 2016

When a new client is referred to Kailua Hongwanji’s Project Dana program, we locate where the client lives and try to match them up with a volunteer that lives in the same area. I meet with the family and obtain a signature on a permission document.

We then schedule a meeting for the new client and their volunteer. I normally attend these meetings to do the introductions.

Recently, due to my family commitments, I was unable to attend a new client meeting. Our volunteer; however, found his way to the client’s apartment and discovered that they were around the same age!

They hit it off – and had a lot to talk about!

Obon

Obon is a time when families come together. It is a special time because families being together is truly special. Together they honor their parents and ancestors through the service and have fun together at the bon dances. This family togetherness is not always acknowledged and it is important to realize that the specialness of the time is made special because the family is interacting and feeling the importance of the connection that occurs with family coming together. Imagine what it would be like to not be able to be together as family? The feeling of loneliness is the direct opposite of togetherness, and this for many of us, is something we can understand well.

Obon in the Shinshu tradition is oftentimes called Kangi E or “Gathering of Joy.” Kangi, or joy as it appears in the Ullambana Sutra, should be nurtured and developed to a stage where it is synonymous with “Shinjin Kangi” of the 18th Vow. What we are saying here is that to blissfully trust in me with the most sincere mind brings great joy. The bon service addresses this understanding. Shinran addresses this in the Tannisho, saying:

Saved by the inconceivable working of Amida’s Vow, we attain birth in the Pure Land thus entrusting ourselves to the Vow, with the thought of saying the nembutusu arising from deep within, immediately do we receive the benefit of being grasped, never to be abandoned.

During obon, let us be reminded of our gratitude to our parents and ancestors. Through this awareness may we more fully realize the interdependent nature of life and be able to express it in our daily lives. Let us at this time of obon take full advantage of the opportunity for family to come together and realize the specialness of the conditions that allow the family to be together.

KHBWA: June 2016

The Kailua BWA is now preparing to make manju for its fundraising efforts in July. The mango will be made on Friday, July 15 and sold at the Kailua Hongwanji Bon Dance.

We are currently seeking donations of the following ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour 5 lb
  • Reynolds baking cups 50 ct - 3 ctn
  • Shirakiku kochi or tsubushi an (5 pkgs.)
  • Purple sweet potato (5 lbs)
  • Green apples (4)
  • Granulated Sugar (4 lbs)

Project Dana: June 2016

When working with our clients, we sometimes have to accommodate special requests in regard to our volunteers. As an example, a new client, who was in her nineties, preferred not to have a male volunteer drive her to appointments. This apparently stemmed from the teenage notion that a male driving you around was thought to be a “boyfriend." I had to arrange for several women to drive her to various places.

Another elderly client needed someone to visit her in her home but she was “deathly afraid" of men. I had arranged for a nice gentlemen volunteer who already had waited over a year for a client, for “friendly visits” on Wednesdays at nine o'clock’; however, during our intake interview, her daughter said that a man would not be satisfactory. Because of this sudden request, I had to hurriedly locate a woman who could visit her on Wednesdays.

Reverend's Message

The journey of life brings adversity. In life we cannot escape hindrances and setbacks. For some people, these hindrances and setbacks become sources of empty complaints and grudges, but for others, the hindrances surpass their mundane life. This difference comes from how they face their own lives, or rather, from whether they have received the wisdom with which they deal with obstructions in life.

When we understand that in prosperity or in adversity, every event in life is the practice hall of the Dharma where we can look at truth and reality and realize that nothing is useless or meaningless in the world. That is why Shinran says, “This Tathagata pervades the countless worlds.” For the practice of shinjin who humbly tries to hear truth from everything and every event, even devils and followers of other religions turn into good teachers. However, to be able to see the Tathagata in devils, we must have the wisdom given by Tathagata.

Jodo Shinshu is not a religion that prays for elimination of misfortunes from life, for Amida Buddha directs to us the wisdom that turns misfortune into merit.

On our own journey in our everyday lives we encounter opportunities to experience the Nembustu as we deal with the challenge of understanding ourselves in our relationship with our lives. This is the kind of realization we experience in everyday life. The great teacher shows up in many ways in our lives. Shinran spoke to this kind of realization in the saying:

My eyes being hindered by blind passions, I cannot perceive the light that grabs me; Yet the great compassion without tiring, Illumines me always.

May we give thanks to our teacher Shinran whose path to gain emancipation, was compassionately shared with others and therefore allows us to share and experience this great path of awakening.
