Bodhi Day Dharma Service for Sunday, December 17, 2023 with a Dharma Talk by guest speaker Rev. David Nakamoto at Windward Buddhist Temple. Rev. Nakamoto previously served at Kailua Hongwanji (now Windward Buddhist Temple) from 2010 until his retirement in 2017. Rev. Brennan officiated the service.

Bodhi Day was on December 8 and commemorates Shakyamuni Buddha's attainment of Awakening under the Bodhi tree. Rev. Nakamoto shares the story of how Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment.

Higan is one of the Hongwanji’s major services. It is the time when there is harmony in the universe, when day and night are equal in length. It is a time for reflection, to recall and try to put into practice the Six Paramitas or Perfections to achieve a balance in our lives. These are: Giving/Charity, Behavior/Morality, Endurance/Patience, Endeavor/Right Effort, Right Meditation, and Right Wisdom.

Remembrance Day is a time to honor family, friends, and even pets who passed away during the month of March, regardless of the year.

Each year, a special service is held in honor of Eshinni, the wife of Jodo Shinshu founder, Shinran Shonin, and their youngest daughter, Kakushinni. We honor Eshinni and her dedication to Shinran. We rejoice in the memory of Shinran’s daughter Kakushinni because had it not been for her, his teaching might not be available for us.

This was our first in-person service for 2021 and the first since suspending in-person services in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eitaikyo is a special service where we remember all those who came before us at our temple who have helped to propagate the Dharma, and, in doing so, have ensured that others are able to do so in the future as well.
